Technology giant Amazon on Thursday has introduced the two newest versions of Kindle, which is a popular e-book reader, in an effort to compete with Apple’s iPad which has sold more than 3 million units just after three months it was introduced in the US market.
One of the new Kindle versions is priced at $139 and would feature Wi-Fi connectivity that will allow users to download digital books wirelessly as long as there is a Wi-Fi signal. This is an improvement compared to the previous model which only uses 3G cellular networks.
The other new Kindle model is priced at $189 that also features Wi-Fi connectivity but has more advanced technologies compared to the cheaper version.
However, Amazon said that both Kindle models are lighter and smaller compared to the previous versions and have higher resolutions to display a more vivid text.
The technology giant has cut the price of Kindle after Apple has introduced iPad that features not just an e-book capability but other advanced technologies such as Google Services that supports online maps and GPS.
In an interview with The New York Times, Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos said the company is “going to continue upgrading the Kindle and that consumers can expect a 10th or a 20th generation Kindle for the next few years to meet their growing demands.”
“The company has been successful in the hardware business and we are going to continue”, Bezos said during an interview with Times.
But when asked if the company will introduced a Kindle version which can support colored images, Bezos said that the plan was “not yet ready” in the market.
The new Kindle models can only support black-and-white colors because these are only built as an e-book reader unlike the iPad which can also serve as a tablet computer with its advanced features like onscreen keyboard, memo applications, and contact address.
After Apple has introduced iPad, rival products such as Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook, and Sony e-book Reader have cut their price.
