Canon Selphy ES3 is a portable printer in a white bag-like shape that makes it easy to carry. In addition, the printer has Creative Print options including frame and border effects to add artistic touch to the pictures.
Aside from the border and framing effects, the printer has layout options and can also support silver and gold inks to frame and put clip images to photos.
To allow users to store their favorite photos, the device has a built-in memory in addition to its USB port and wireless connectivity for a simple and quick printing without the need of any cable.
This compact printer, which uses dye sublimation, has a 3.5-inch colored LCD screen for previewing images.
But on the other side of its “cute” chassis, Selphy ES3’s output is not as crisp and well-detailed compared to other high-end compact printer out in the market today. This shortcoming can be attributed to the dye sublimation technology which uses magenta, cyan, yellow inks, and clear coating which are then infused in a roll of plastic film.
When tested, this printer gave a yellowish cast on the whole photo except in the flesh tones which looked “acceptably” ok.
Another notable downside is the snail-phase printing process as Selphy ES3 can take about 75 seconds of printing a 4-by-6 inch photo (regardless of the subjects’ colors)—one of the slowest photo printer in the market.
Aside from its mediocre print quality, Selphy ES3 consumes more inks compared to other photo printers. This can be shown by the fact that a $15 module can print at least 50 photos, or 30 cents for every copy.
With all its major downside, the printer’s inability to support regular paper (as it can only support post card paper) is the most mentioned flaw of this compact printer—prompting consumers to think if this device is worth its price.
But despite its shortcomings, the printer’s simple control-panel is worth mentioning. However, this may not be enough for people who are expecting more from their photo printer.
