US networking giant Cisco has recently unveiled its latest tablet computer specifically designed for business users. This product has been introduced by the company in an effort to compete with Apple iPad which has already sold more than 3 million units three months after it was introduced in the US market.
Cisco’s new product Cius (pronounced “see us”) is using Google’s open-source Android operating system and has a 7-inch screen display that is smaller than iPad’s 9.7-inch panel.
Despite its limited screen display, Cius will have features which are lacking in iPad—a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a front-mounted HD camera which has been designed to support real-time video and HD video streaming.
According to Cisco, its new product features instant messaging, web browsing through Wi-Fi connective (and eventually 4G Technology), email, and other applications and programs designed to meet the needs of business travelers and professionals.
In addition, the computer tablet also features a technology that will allow users to share, produce, and edit content that is stored on the Internet.
“With the computer’s ability to share and access contents, users can maximize their work productivity anywhere they go”, Cisco said in a statement.
Aside from business professionals, Cisco senior vice president Tony Bates said that Cius can be used by health care providers, retailers, and educational institutions.
“The platform can transform the industry and how retailers deliver their products and services to their consumers….universities giving their students helpful information”, Bates said.
Meanwhile, Cius would be introduced in the first quarter of next year as the device is still under customer trial in order for Cisco to further improve its features and add applications that would make the tablet more interactive compared to its competitors.
Because of the growing competition among tablet computer makers, the price of Amazon Kindle and Sony e-reader has been lowered especially after Apple Inc. has introduced iPad.
Last month, computer giant Dell has also introduced its newest tablet computer called “Streak” which is also using Google’s open-source Android.
