For couch potatoes, there is now a reason to be less sedentary with a new laptop called Gateway NV5933u which has a built-in Blu-ray Disc partnered with a powerful 15.6-inch display designed to support vivid images with its 1366-by-768-pixel display.
Despite being cumbersome (14.66 inches long and 10.19 inches wide), at least the laptop is relatively portable with its weight of 5.84 pounds and looks reliable and sturdy enough to accommodate excessive use and a movie marathon.
When it comes to ergonomics design, the laptop has a large keyboard complete with a number pad and a not-so-easy-to-glide touchpad (so mouse would be more advisable). Meanwhile, the computer has several dedicated buttons for volume control, Wi-Fi connection, backup control, and power button that is located on one side (a quite unconventional location).
The ports of NV5933u are basic: microphone jacks, USB 2.0 ports, multformat card reader, headphone, ethernet port, 56-kbps fax/modem port, VGA port, HDMI port, and USB 2.0 ports. One downside is its lack of eSATA or Express Card slots.
In terms of reliability, the laptop is quite acceptable to the market standard with its ability to support up to 4GB RAM, 320GB hard drive, 2.13GHz Intel Core i3-330M processor—all running in Windows 7 Home Premium.
While the NV5933u has a built-in Blu-ray Disc, the screen display has a poor viewing angle that is prone to reflections and “weak” color. But overall, the LED-backlight screen is acceptable for a single viewer because anyone who is sitting on the extreme left and right of the laptop may not have a clear view.
Another deal-breaker is the laptop’s lack of graphics card that prevents people to play complex video games unless if they are willing to resort to Flash game. If this is not bad enough, the computer also lacks Bluetooth connection which has already become the standard in the market.
Overall the features of this laptop are quite acceptable—in terms of average use.
