In a remarkable turn of event, Google Android phones have toppled BlackBerry devices as the top-selling smartphones in the US during the second quarter of this year, according to a report released by the NPD Group.
In the report, Android phones accounted for 33 percent of all smartphones purchased between April and June, toppling BlackBerry devices which accounted for 28 percent.
“While Android-back phones have taken a significant market share from BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion (RIM), Apple iPhone has only experienced a small quarterly gain despite the recent launch of its latest version called iPhone 4”, NPD official Ross Rubin said.
iPhone accounted for 22 percent of purchased smartphones during the second quarter.
NDP said that Motorola Droid was the most popular Android phone followed by the HTC Droid Incredible, and the HTC Evo 4G.
Despite being toppled by its rival company, RIM officials are expecting to lead the market again with their new product Torch which will run on a new BlackBerry 6 software. The new smartphone will also feature touch-sensitive screen, sliding keyboard, and WebKit-based browser.
BlackBerry is a popular choice for business professionals since the device offers the most secure service data that makes it hard, or even impossible, to conduct electronic espionage.
Previously, a Nielsen report showed that Android phones are becoming popular in the US market, toppling its rival companies including Apple which used to be the biggest smartphone seller in the country over the past several years.
Meanwhile, some analysts believe that the Android phone’s popularity will continue for the next several years as it features a large screen which is one of the most preferred features of mobile users.
According to Nielsen report, the sales of Android phones had increased by 13 percent during the second quarter compared to the same period last year. These phones usually feature email and web browsing capability.
Smartphones with Internet features accounted for 25 percent of the US market at the end of June. The research group predicted that this rate would continue increasing until the end of 2011.
