Phone maker Research In Motion (RIM) on Tuesday has introduced its latest product BlackBerry Torch which is the company’s first mobile phone (priced at $199) that features touch-sensitive screen and slider keyboard.
In a statement, the company said the new phone will be available in the US market on August 12 and comes with a two-year contract with telecommunication giant AT&T. Just like the phone’s predecessors, it has been designed for business professionals who rely on email and text messages.
And because the phone caters specifically for business travelers and professional users, it offers Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11 b/g/n) which can be access through BlackBerry Internet Bundle and Enterprise Server. The Internet connectivity also supports WPA and carrier services.
“The Torch is more powerful compared to its predecessors because it runs on BlackBerry 6 operating system”, the company during a press event held in New York City.
The technology giant added that the phone features a 5-megapixel camera complemented with the latest image technologies including continuous auto-focus, video recording capability (VGA), 11 scene modes, geo-tagging, and image stabilization.
While BlackBerry executives have answered all the inquiries about their newest product, they remained mum over the plans of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to ban the company’s data service starting in October. BlackBerry users are enjoying a highly secure wireless communication that makes it impossible for countries to conduct electronic spying.
According to UAE officials, BlackBerry phones allow people to “commit violations which the country cannot monitor”, prompting the government to suspend the company’s signal starting on October 11.
Previously, RIM representatives and UAE officials held talks about the plan to suspend BlackBerry’s service data in the country. And when asked for comments, the technology giant said that “such discussions were very confidential”.
BlackBerry is currently the most popular smartphone is the US but is facing tough competition with Apple iPhones and Android handsets. However, most analysts believe that BlackBerry phones will still dominate the niche market of business users.
