Korea’s largest electronics company Samsung Corp. on Thursday revealed the new “Galaxy Tab” tablet computer, which was dubbed as the Apple iPad killer.
The new Galaxy Tab is much smaller and lighter – with a 7-inch touchscreen and weighing only 0.8 pound – compared to the iPad, which has a 9.7-inch display and weighs 1.5 pounds.
The device also runs on Google Inc’s Android 2.2 operating system, making it a formidable competitor in the tablet PC market.
“We recognized the tremendous growth potential of this relatively young and virtually unlimited market of the tablet computer. We believe that Samsung Galaxy Tab can open up a unique market for the company,” Samsung mobile communications Chief JK Shin said during the IFA electronics trade fair in Berlin, Germany.
“Fans in can expect have their hands around the Galaxy Tab by mid-September,” Shin said, adding that it would be first launch in Europe followed by South Korean, United States and Southeast Asian markets in the coming months.
However, the price of the new Samsung Galaxy Tab may undercut its growth potential, reportedly selling at 799 euros in Germany and 699 euros in France. A bit pricy compared to the $499 iPad (basic model) in the US.
Also, applications may also be an issue against the new Galaxy Tab with majority of the developers betting on the iPad for games and other types of applications.
More than two months after its first release, the iPad has been in an outstanding pace with more than three million units sold. The demand for the device remained strong as US consumers lined up for weeks just to get their hands on the new iPad.
Apple has also offered more threat to the new Samsung device following the launch of the iPad in dozen other countries and China later this month.
With the success of the iPad, Samsung is now batting for the development of new applications, games, and programs for the Galaxy Tab allowing it to respond to the growing tablet computer demand.
