Technology giant Sharp Electronics has unveiled Friday its newest product which is a touch-sensitive liquid crystal display (LCD) that shows 3D images without the need for viewers to wear special glasses.
While Sharp did not mention its specific plans about the LCD, some analysts speculated that the new product will be available in the upcoming video game DS console of Nintendo which has a commercial tie with the company.
In a conference with the media, Sharp said the new LCD can support three-dimensional images at a distance of 30 cm (or 12 inch) from the screen without requiring a person to wear special glasses for 3D images.
The company said the 3D screen is using a technology called parallax which can display image dimensions simultaneously to each eye while retaining picture quality, thus giving the illusion that viewers are looking at three-dimension images.
In a statement, Yoshisuke Hasegawa, Sharp’s business manager in its LCD department, said the company has been developing a 3D screen since 2002 but have experienced difficulties because the blueprint products showed poor image resolution and clarity.
But after years of testing, the technology giant said it is now ready to launch a series of 3D screens which will be mass-produced in Japan by early September.
Hasegawa also said that several Sharp customers have already expressed interest on the new 3D product, including phone makers. However, the official declined to identify the interested parties.
According to Sharp, the 3D touchscreen can be used in several consumer gadgets including gaming consoles, mobile phones, digital photo frames, and digital cameras.
The company said it is optimistic that the new 3D product will be used in the next-generation mobile phones. However, it said that this technology will only be successful if will not require the use for special glasses.
When asked if the 3D screen will be used in Nintendo 3DS, a gaming console which will be released by the end of March 2011, Hasegawa also declined to give comments.
