The new Apple iPhone 4S caused quite a stir upon its unveiling for not being the much anticipated iPhone 5, but Apple enthusiasts shouldn’t overlook the phone as if it were just a basic prepaid phone. While the iPhone 4S may look just like its older brother, the iPhone 4, it comes packed with a variety of features that definitely make it much more advanced.
The foremost feature that reviewers can seem to get enough of is Siri.
Siri is a voice-controlled assistant that isn’t found on any other iPhone, and isn’t matched by any other cell phone developer. Walter Mossbery of the Wall Street Journal even commented that:
“The standout feature is Siri. It answers questions and provides information using natural language and an intelligent understanding, not just of words, but of context and colloquial phrasing…it isn’t a simple voice-command system. It understands a wide variety of ways to ask a question, grasps the context, and returns useful information in a friendly way, either audibly or by displaying results on the screen. It learns your voice as it goes along.”
However, Siri is a component of the new iOS 5 which runs the iPhone 4S, not a brand new feature of the actual iPhone itself. Updates to the actual phone include:
-An 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with the ability to take wider and more clear photos
-The A5 CPU which means better processing speeds because of the new dual core processor
-Two antenna internal feature allowing for better connectivity
By far, the biggest advancement is the camera itself. It is no longer cumbersome to get to when your phone it locked, and can take superior photos
and video. The camera is now able to perform well in low-lighting areas, and there is a fifth lens element. The camera is also able to shoot clear 1080p video.
The A5 CPU has definitely made using apps a little bit quicker, and has reduced the number of pauses when downloading or hopping from one function to
the next – but it isn’t so dramatically different from the iPhone 4. In fact, many users may notice the slight speed increase, but not so much so that they are blown away.
Overall, the iPhone 4S is a success on Apple’s part. While it may just seem like a slight stepping stone between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, its operating system and new camera features are definitely advancements worth noting. And if the iPhone 5 is only to bring about more amazing achievements for Apple, then iPhone enthusiasts should be prepared to be blown away.
